Over at the Lightroom community, there’s been a fair amount of in-fighting in the last couple of weeks with regard to the direction that Steve Mydland and Lightroom are taking (indictments of a “pattern” of bad behaviour, to keep it brief). The point I want to make is that Lightroom is indeed an important part of Adobe’s Creative Suite. I say this not because I’m planning to travel coyly out onto the stage under the spotlight, but because I really believe that Photoshop has reached a point where it is ready to retire from a “core” product, and the storied 3rd product is ready for a change of life. Not that everything is rosy, mind you. But it’s a change of directions.
I will use V1.5 as a baseline for all my testing, but will comment on the differences in V1.6. Some of the features that I have not seen addressed are: increasing drill-down capabilities for grid-based adjustments, searching for specific points, text and media on layers, and full 64-bit support. The software is now entirely updated to 64-bit processing. Previously, some modules like the Grid, Guides & Axis, Names, Panels, Profiles, and Preferences worked great, but other modules are still rather slow.
The first tool in the basic toolbox: The Brush Tool. The Paint Bucket tool is good for filling areas with a solid color. The Eraser tool is great for erasing areas on an image, such as unwanted areas of a layer or background. The Gradient Tool is great for creating color gradients. You’ll also need to decide if you want to use both the standard tools and the Photoshop extensions, or the other way around.
As you use these tools, you’ll discover that they all make sense and are easy to use. They work as well as their desktop counterparts, allowing you to get more bang for your buck.
