While many Photoshop users say that the tool’s basic features are what set it apart from other editing programs, my experience with the tool is that the basics aren’t that great. It’s more powerful than other tools, but it’s also confusing and counterintuitive.
Some of the most commonly used Photoshop tools
When you use Photoshop, you typically open a document and create objects, such as a photograph, photo-realistic painting, or illustration that you intend to use as a background.
You start by creating a new document, which is a blank canvas for an image. Then you add layers of artwork by drawing, painting, or creating a photo-realistic illustration. After the painting is completed, you place it on the background layer. See the upcoming sidebar “How to copy and paste layers and objects” for details on working with layers.
Buttons at the bottom of the screen enable you to access the toolbox, tools, and dialog boxes (windows). You can also bring a set of objects and commands to the foreground by using the layer stack (described in the sidebar “How to browse, organize, and browse layers,” later in this chapter).
Often, such as when you insert or remove an object in a document, you place the object on the New Layer icon on the top of the Layers panel. Then you make the necessary modifications to the artwork by using the tools, controls, and dialog boxes.
But you can also work in an entirely different way, placing the objects and tools you want at the forefront, much like using desktop icons to access content. You may want to create a toolbox of popular tools that you regularly use to create specific types of artwork.
You can build an entire document with tools and objects by using shortcuts and the workspace, which you can see in Figure 1-3. You get all the features of Photoshop in the workspace when you create a document.
Working with the workspace
The workspace is a visual representation of the tools and objects that you have selected for a document. Because the tools and objects are selected, you can change the order of objects, hide some of them, and move them to different places in the workspace.
In Figure 1-3, I have a couple of tools in the foreground and a canvas in the background. By grabbing a tool and dragging it onto the canvas, I’m creating a new layer. Then I’ll create some artwork by using other tools and control boxes, and when the

What’s New in the?
Chemically amplified resist compositions are widely used as microfabrication resists because of their higher sensitivity, resolution and dry etching resistance than conventional novolak/novolak photoresists.
The chemical amplification type resists also have advantages such as high resolution in comparison with the conventional positive resist using a quinonediazide/novolak system.
However, the chemically amplified photoresists also have a disadvantage of difficulty in affinity with a substrate since the photoresist film used is soluble in the developing solution.
When a chemically amplified photoresist is used as an etch mask for etching, it is necessary to first remove the photoresist film with the etchant by means of a two-step process. This limits the application fields of the chemically amplified resist.
In the process of removing the pattern from the resist, wet etching is mainly used to carry out a pattern transfer to the substrate. The pattern is transferred to the substrate by dissolving the resist with the etchant, and the pattern is formed on the substrate by stripping off the soluble pattern.
The conventional one-step etching method consists in etching, patterning and stripping in one step. However, due to the strong relationship between the conditions of etching, such as the speed of etching, shape of the resist pattern, etching selectivity with the substrate material, etc. and the condition of etching such as the temperature and concentration of the etchant, it is difficult to form a fine pattern with high resolution.
In order to overcome such problems, a method for improving the resolution and preventing a loss of the resist pattern was developed. This method is to use a two-step etching process in which the solvent in the resist film is removed with the etchant and then the remaining resist pattern is dissolved with a new etchant for stripping-off the substrate.
This process of carrying out etching in two steps is called a two-step etching method or a single etching method.
However, in order to perform the two-step etching method, the etchant used in the first step must be able to dissolve the photoresist and have both high etching selectivity with the substrate material and high etching selectivity with the resist pattern.
Also, the two-step etching method requires a new etchant capable of being dissolved in the resist film and capable of etching the substrate.
The two-step etching method has its advantageous point in that it is
