AutoCAD was the original CAD application on the market, and until SolidWorks was released in 2000 was also available in a later version that supported the AutoCAD database.
The overall design philosophies of Vectorworks, 3ds Max, and SolidWorks were very different from each other and from AutoCAD.
AutoCAD uses a direct manipulation approach in its user interface, which provides fast and effective use for an individual designer, but limits the user’s ability to produce complex designs.
Vectorworks is an application that allowed a user to create a drawing, without using a mouse. Once the design was complete, a mouse and keyboard were used to export the drawing as a DXF, or a CDL (Cadastral Data Language). The CAD application supported the DXF format, allowing other applications, such as AutoCAD, to import vectorized drawings. However, the vectorized CAD application only imported vector files and did not support editing them.
3ds Max is an application that supported both direct manipulation and rasterization. It supported a large number of complex features, including full animation capabilities, and tools for lighting, texturing, sculpting, and rendering. It had also become one of the most widely used CAD programs on the market by the early 2000s. However, it had a very steep learning curve and very large data files.
SolidWorks was a direct manipulation application that was released before 3ds Max. It allowed a user to design models directly on a computer screen using an input device similar to the mouse. The design was then exported as a DWG or DGN file. SolidWorks also had a large learning curve and required very large data files.
In addition to the design philosophy differences, there were a number of features and capabilities that made each of these applications suitable for different uses.
Design Philosophy
For example, the number of drawing areas available in Vectorworks, 3ds Max, and SolidWorks were very different.
Vectorworks only supported the creation of one drawing area per document. A user could open and save many different documents within the same application. For example, a landscape architect might need to generate a blueprint for a building site, an interior for a home, and then an exterior for a hillside.
